International Events

January 11, 2014 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’m studying marketing as one of my subjects for my Equine Science Degree at Charles Sturt University, and have been made aware of www.eventseye.com.  This site lists events that are occurring around the world, searchable by:

  • name
  • theme
  • date
  • location
  • organiser
  • keywords

If you’re hoping to establish relationships overseas, or want to know about events that you can promote your equine product/service at, how great to know about this site!  If you search by keywords, and enter ‘horse’, it gives you a list of 53 events worldwide!

I made a note of only the first six examples:

  • HUND & PFERD – Dortmund (Germany)
VDH National Breeding Show and Exhibition for Horse Aficionados
  • SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE – Clermont-Ferrand (France)
    Fair specialized in Livestock Production
  • HORSES – Tampere (Finland)
    Horse fair
  • DIHF – DUBAI INTERNATIONAL HORSE FAIR – Dubai (UAE – United Arab Emirates)
Equestrian Event for the Middle East
  • ADIHEX – INTERNATIONAL HUNTING & EQUESTRIAN EXHIBITION – Abu Dhabi (UAE – United Arab Emirates)
    International Hunting & Equestrian Exhibition
  • EUROHORSE– Gothenburg (Sweden)
Equestrian Fair. Everything for the Horse and Rider

If you have a horse business that you’re planning to take internationally, or one that you’re setting up, I encourage you to consider international opportunities to grow.

Friday Feature: Rug Repairs

January 10, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This week’s letter is R.  I don’t have any careers explored that start with Q yet! If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Preservation (Equine).

Repairing rugs is one of those jobs that requires a knowledge of a horse’s size and shape, but is not necessarily hands on with horses.  Although it’s summer here in the Southern Hemisphere, I’m sure many rugs are being utilised for winter in the Northern Hemisphere!  I guess likewise, cotton summer rugs are found dotted on horses in paddocks here in Australia.

Przewalski's Horse.

Someone who is involved in rug repairs for horses, may find themselves:

  • Working from home, but possibly travelling to pick up rugs in need of repair
  • Sewing a lot on an industrial machine
  • Carrying out repetitive work within a pressured timeframe
  • With the need for many clients, or clients with a large number of horses
  • With a peak demand for their service leading up to and through winter

Because horses are often housed together or get bored in a stable, rugs will get damaged through wear and tear, inquisitive teeth and rough playing.  There will no doubt always be the need for rugs to be repaired or replaced.  The rug repairer who also designs and makes their own rugs could further expand their business.

Well I’ve received an email that has definitely grabbed my attention!  The College of Agriculture, Rural and Food Enterprise (CAFRE) is running 3 free online equine workshops in the new year.

They cover the topics of:

  • Equine Nutrition from 20/01/14 to 02/02/14; deadline to express interest to enrol is 13 January 2014
  • Horse Health from 10/02/14 to 23/02/14; deadline to express interest to enrol is 03 February 2014
  • Equine Breeding from 03/03/14 to 16/03/14; deadline to express interest to enrol is 24 February 2014

 As per the email…

“The online lectures will be available during the first week and revision and test sessions will be available during the second week. Participants can access the sessions at any time during their scheduled week. Upon completion of the course all participants will gain a certificate of completion from CAFRE. Participants will be able to study any of the topics individually or can study all three subjects.

Participants from anywhere in the world will be able to access these free online courses.“

I’m always up for free education!  What about you?  If wanting to enrol, contact Janine Bryce on 028 9442 6843 or email janine.bryce@dardni.gov.uk before the enrolment deadline.

Friday Feature: Preservation (Equine)

January 3, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This week’s letter is P. If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Office Administration (Equine).

Przewalski's Horse. In primary school I had a great fascination with the Quagga (a now extinct member of the equus family).  In highschool this moved onto Przewalski’s horse and later in life, I discovered a chance to work in Mongolia and help to preserve this breed in the wild.

Many breeders today work to preserve a particular bloodline, or promote and preserve a new breed that has been established via many generations of breeding the same type of horse.  For me, the idea of helping to preserve a breed that is declining in numbers would be an exciting thing!  Or even helping to manage and preserve a ‘wild’ breed, such as the American Mustang or the Australian Brumby.

This form of equine related work and research may involve:

  • travel
  • observing equine routines
  • establishing natural habitat
  • restraining and medicating horses
  • tracking particular horses
  • holding for the short term and breeding before releasing into a ‘natural’ habitat

The work in itself could be demanding but very rewarding.  Imagine watching the numbers increase over the years of a breed that was nearing the endangered species list!

In the Presence of Horses

January 1, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Natalie Baxter is a woman in her late thirties who knows and loves horses. It is her gift with them that has allowed her to live a nomadic lifestyle – travelling here and there, always able to pick up work.

Landing a job at a stable where the previous and only horseperson who managed it has died, she struggles to work out what her role is exactly, in spite of being employed by a gentleman who lives on the premises and insists she is doing well.

In the Presence of Horses by Barbara Dimmick

Not eager to stay, Natalie finds herself unusually drawn to a poorly conformed black horse that needs to be started under saddle. Twister becomes the anchor that keeps her in the area in spite of a keen desire to up and run as she has done so many times before.

As Natalie comes to know the people in the area and learns of the story behind the previous manager’s death, she is forced to examine her own childhood and the reason why she now leads a nomadic existence. In the Presence of Horses explores the decisions that have resulted from a childhood of much pain, selfishness and loss.

After a haunting discovery in the Pennsylvanian town where Natalie is working, the young horsewoman escapes to her hometown a few hours drive away. Finding herself not able to leave again, she discovers much has changed in the twenty years that she has been absent.

Eventually determined to put things right from where she left in such a rush, Natalie feels dread when a call to the home of her boss sparks no response on many an occasion. Touching base with the local vet of the Pennsylvanian town, she is strongly encouraged to return. Doing so, she finds disaster has struck the horses that she’d been employed to look after.

In the Presence of Horses ends with the main character’s resolve to face her past and be mindful of her future, rather than wandering aimlessly. The book in itself is an interesting read that I would recommend for the older reader, due to its depressing and angst filled story line. As with many horse novels, it follows more the relationships of the characters than the life of being a horse person, but features many horse related scenes and discussions.
