Horses and Accounting

October 9, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I was contacted recently about joining a horse business related group on LinkedIn.  The person who invited me is a part of Duncan Dovico Accountants and Advisors.

What caught my attention about this business was that they have an area of their services that is dedicated to helping out equine businesses!  On their site it states:

“DD Equine is a specialist Division within the DUNCAN DOVICO (“DD”) Accounting Practice established to provide Accounting and Taxation services to the Equine Industry and its participants.”

How great to see an area that is important to all businesses, that focuses on helping horse businesses.  The best aspect for me is that the team members know horses and the equine industry.  If you have an interest in horses and accounting, perhaps gaining a role in such a business could be your ideal job!

Are you Wise with Your Horse Related Funds?

How would you know what is focused on?  Well on this site, they indicate that services cover:

  • Taxation Advice to Individuals and Business Owners
  • Specialist Taxation and Accounting advice to Horse Breeders, Horse Owners and other industry participants
  • Assisting clients commencing their equine business with start up strategic planning and important structuring advice.
  • Preparation of Individual taxation returns and all related matters with the Australian Taxation Office
  • Tax and related advice for property owners, including rural property owners, farming and related enterprises
  • Specialist Self Managed Superannuation Fund services

Further to this, they have also generated complimentary contacts within the equine industry:

  • Expert Legal Advisors specialising in the equine area
  • Insurance Brokers specialising in bloodstock and equine related cover
  • Financiers and Lenders providing lending solutions for assets including – bloodstock, property, plant and equipment
  • Financial Planners who work with us to assist you to develop wealth creation strategies

Is it wrong that money and horses are two topics that cause me so much interest? 😉

If you’re interested in finding out more about DD Equine, take a look at their site – who knows, it may open up an idea for a new job role!

Rim-Fyre and the Stones of Time

October 7, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was contacted by author Mitzy Tait-zeller to see if I would be interested in reading and reviewing her equine fantasy novel that was published this year. Other than reading Sabaska’s Tale this year, I haven’t really read horse stories that are fantasy, so was eager to try out another novel in this genre.

Rim-Fyre and the Stones of Time by Mitzy Tait-zeller

Serena Tattum is a wife and mother of two children. The story picks up with her taking her precocious chestnut stallion out for a ride to expel some of his pent up energy. The pair seems to work well together, in spite of Serena’s need to consistently check the stallion so that he doesn’t develop bad habits or get out of control.

This ride changes things dramatically for Serena as she finds herself unexplainably in the 19th century, although she started her ride in the 21st century. Finding no way to rectify the situation, Serena resolves to find someone who can help her, even if they may not understand the situation.

Rim-Fyre and the Stones of Time is an entertaining story that explores the lengths one woman will go to, to return to her much loved husband and children, whilst learning about a different way of living over a hundred years before she was born.

Tait-zeller provides a great comparison through Serena’s eyes of the land she loves in the 21st century and what it looked like in the late 1800s. Rim-Fyre is the equine hero and the author aptly uses him to describe the beauty and strength of a Canadian breed of horse.

A unique aspect of this 20 chapter story that I really enjoyed, was a thought provoking quote at the start of each chapter. The end to the 242 page novel hints at the opportunity for a follow on story in which this woman and her incredible charge may feature.

Aside from a small amount of cursing, the novel I feel is friendly to readers of any age and will no doubt appeal to teens and adults alike. Well worth the read.

In my library? As an eBook it is! An interesting addition and perhaps the second of it’s genre to be added to my still growing horse library.

Equine Reproductive Technician

October 5, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A message was sent out to the equine students of the degree I am doing with regards to a current horse breeding position that is available:

Reproductive Technicians could Cater to Many Breeds of Horses

“I am the owner of a Warmblood Horse Stud in Australia and write to see if you have any Students or qualified vets with a specialty training in Equine reproductive work.  I need a person to do the transrectal scanning for follicles and pregnancy testing , and all aspects of AI , including collection with AV from the stallion, AI of the mare with either fresh or frozen semen etc.

It can be someone who has done a certificate course to be a qualified horse AI technician as long as they can use the scanner as well as AI. I have a stallion handler and a fully set up facility do all this.  You can see about us on my website www.coldstreampark.com.au.

There are 18 mares here due to foal from oct to dec and be rebred and a few empty mares.  I need someone from this November 2013 to February 2014. If 2 students were interested to share the job that would be ok .  I am offering a paid position, pay to depend on experience.

I hope you may be able to help to find me a suitable person for this breeding season and possibly future years.

Contact details:

M 0409337154

E wendy@coldstreampark.com.au”

This sounds like such a great position for the person with the right experience!  It got me thinking that perhaps I haven’t covered this as a career possibility on this blog.

It is possible to be a reproductive technician without being a qualified vet.  There are courses in artificial insemination that can be undertaken to be able to carry out this job for yourself or clients.  In fact, my equine science degree covers a couple of subjects that will have me qualified to do so by the time I’ve completed it.

if you have a passion for the theory and practical of breeding technologies, especially artificial insemination, this career choice may be worth considering.

Friday Feature: Bloodstock Agent

October 4, 2013 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

Moving onto the next letter of the alphabet, it’s time to look at an equine career starting with B.  If you missed last weeks, take a look at Friday Feature: Author.

Bloodstock agents are often involved in the purchase and sale of horses.  They need to have a good eye for horse conformation (remember that this varies depending on what the horse needs to do, eg race, jump, pull a carriage, etc), as well as a working knowledge of horse pedigrees.

Bloodstock agents are able to generate a full time career, largely in the Thoroughbred industry.  (This doesn’t mean that other horse breeds don’t have agents though!)  If you have a passion for finding the right racehorse for an eager buyer, this may be worth considering as a career option.

To break into this industry it is important to have horse skills, contacts… and a qualification relating to horses wouldn’t go astray!  Many people undertake horse courses to further or prove their knowledge as well as gain the contacts to break into the equine field they’re interested in.

Do You have a Passion for Bloodstock?
