Networking at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sales

January 3, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Depending on the field of horse work your interested in getting into, different events may catch your eye.  For those interested in working in the thoroughbred industry, or just looking to gain some hands on horse experience in an industry that can get you work almost anywhere around the world, attending a yearling sale could be particularly beneficial.

So if you’re near to the Melbourne area at the start of March, why not consider attending the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sales?  It’s open to the public and will be just swarming with people already involved in the industry:

  • Buyers and sellers of horses
  • Managers of farms
  • Auctioneers and bloodstock agents
  • Stud hands
  • Horse riders

Perhaps you may stumble across a stud that is looking for extra hands for the weaning season, or the Autumn Yearling Sales, also at the same complex.  Be sure to check out the main entrance area where free sale catalogues are available, as well as an array of advertising material from many studs – this may help in chasing up some future work and contacts!

The catalogue of pedigrees will at least help you to ascertain which studs are selling large numbers and may be in need of an extra pair of hands.  Don’t bypass those selling a horse or three though, they may be more willing to invest the time in an equine enthusiast keen on gaining some experience.

Sale details:

  • 3 – 6 of March (and a couple of days prior for viewing sale stock)
  • People tend to be milling around from 8am if looking to check out what’s available for sale; or after 10am if just interested in a look
  • 285 Oaklands Road, Oaklands Junction VIC 3063

An Educational Sponsor

Larneuk Stud Logo

Hi everyone! In honour of my theme for 2013 of education, I thought I’d introduce you all to the proud sponsor of my EquusEducation page at Facebook – Larneuk Stud!

Larneuk is a thoroughbred stud based in North East Victoria and I adore this place.

The location is gorgeous, the boss great and I got to learn so much about working with horses and gain so many skills whilst working there over the years:

  • administering medications
  • foaling down mares
  • holding mares for cover
  • holding horses for the farrier and vetting
  • handling foals
  • feeding and checking horses
  • ATV and tractor driving

The list goes on!  And now Larneuk is supporting me in another way, by sponsoring my facebook page.

So I have a challenge for you – if you like what is provided through this blog – career and travel options regarding horses – why not hope on over to Larneuk Stud’s Facebook page and like it in thanks for their support of EquusEducation?  Thanks so much!

Saved Equine Law Webinar Available Online

January 1, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Hi everyone! The Free Equine Law Webinar that was available at Alison Rowe’s Equine Law site is available to anyone that may have missed it, or wants to listen again! Due to the time difference in Australia, even though I’d signed up for this Webinar, I wasn’t able to be online when it was being aired.

However, it is available to listen to and the PowerPoint slides can also be downloaded! You can do so via this link.  Enjoy!

How you Finish Something Affects how you Start Another

December 31, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

At church on Sunday our pastor was talking about finishing well. I always love this time of year to think about what I want to achieve next year. What I don’t tend to do so often, is remember what’s been achieved in the past twelve months.

Something he said really resonated with me – how I end 2012, will affect how I start 2013. I may not have achieved all I wanted to this year, but my attitude towards finishing 2012 can affect my effectiveness on what I want to achieve in 2013.

So do you have an idea of how you’d like to finish out this year and start the next one? This may be a list of resolutions, or perhaps it’s an idea or two brimming at the surface that you’ve yet to look further into.

What do You Want Your Role to be?
What do You Want Your Role to be?

Can I encourage a theme for 2013? Education. There are so many things in life that can be learnt – facts, skills, relationships, habits, the list goes on. Make it a goal of yours to continue to educate yourself for the better.

This may just be choosing to look at life from a different approach or it may be signing up to undertake a course or learn a new skill. My great grandmother was a firm believer in, ‘the day I stop learning is the day I die.’

For me, 2012 has been an incredible year:

  • I married my beautiful fiancé
  • We now get to share life together daily
  • I started work casually at an education institution I’ve been keen to work at for the past few years
  • This has resulted in a contract for 2013
  • I got kicked in the head by a horse and ended up in an induced coma for 4 days
  • This showed me how incredible my husband is by sticking by me, looking after me and encouraging me to take things slow for the health of my head

Things I have achieved or completed in 2012 are making 2013 look like a very promising year, indeed!

The Mustangers by Lauran Paine

December 27, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So the local library has older books for sale cheap and I managed to pick up a couple of hard backed horse books for a few dollars each!  One of these is The Mustangers.

The Mustangers by Lauran Paine

Two men head out in autumn as is their routine each year, heading for northern Arizona. They get talked into helping catch some mustangs that have been competing with cattle for grazing and water.

After this stint of ‘mustanging’ they’re talked into moving onto Mexico to catch horses here for a dog food company. They get caught up in the daily lives of a small town that doesn’t have much entertainment.

Although mustanging proves to be fruitful in St. Teresa, the story doesn’t prove to be. The end is a bit of a let down to, seeming like the author didn’t know how to wrap up the story. You can read a more in depth version at suite101.

One unique feature about this hard back novel that I quite liked was it being printed in large print. This is the first book I’ve seen that caters to those who struggle with smaller print books.

Author: Lauran Paine

Fiction – Western.
In my library? The jury’s out on whether I’ll keep this one. It’s not a horse book that I really enjoyed, didn’t find very entertaining, interesting or amusing. Although there wasn’t a lot of it, the swearing infrequently found also led to my disappointment in this novel.
