Horse Venue Biosecurity Workbook

March 28, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have touched before on the topic of biosecurity and horses.  I really feel there is the potential for a course in this area alone!  It is nice to see some horse courses have a subject that focuses on this at least.  I was recently made aware of the Horse Venue Biosecurity Workbook through one such subject where I work.

There is a farm biosecurity website that has a section dedicated to horses.  If you’re aware that there are some horse diseases that can infect – and even kill – people, then you’ll know that biosecurity on a horse property is important.

Consider the likes of the Hendra virus and the impact it has had in Australia.  Zoonotic diseases are a real threat.  Biosecurity measures are to protect other horses as well as those who care for them.

The above link provides information and tools about how horse property owners can implement practices that protect horse health and human health.  Some things you can actively do each day, others you can implement for particular horse practices.

You can download the Horse Venue Biosecurity Workbook to help you with planning on your own property.  The idea of the booklet is to assist property owners with “a set of biosecurity measures applicable to their venue, which can easily be implemented over time to ensure horses are protected from diseases and pests”.

The Horse Biosecurity Workbook

What sort of resources can you find in the workbook?

  • an Action Plan template
  • an Emergency Disease Action Plan
  • Visitor Register
  • Visitor Risk Assessment checklist
  • Movement Records sheet
  • Husbandry Records sheet

If you check out the horses section of this farm biosecurity site, you’ll also find plenty of other resources on offer.  When you can access free horse information and resources, I think it’s always worth investigating!

Save the Ponies! By Gillian Baxter

March 26, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Save the Ponies! is an interesting children’s story by Gillian Baxter.  Young Angela and Ian Kendall live with their uncle Arthur and his wife Grace.  An interesting addition to the household is the two palomino pantomime ponies, Magic and Moonshine.  They live in a stable behind the shop where Arthur lives and works.

The ponies have provided fond memories for many locals, but this doesn’t stop the new landlord insisting that they need to be relocated from the premises.  Arthur is unsure what to do and Angela is dismayed at the thought of losing the ponies.  But in the built up area where they live, it seems there is nowhere else to keep the two small equines.

The local brewery that houses some incredible Shire horses used to make deliveries to local pubs becomes a short term solution.  The men who are used to working with 18 hand high horses find the ‘toy-sized’ ponies a delightful distraction.  Ian is afraid they don’t take them seriously and Angela is dismayed when Ian starts to pay more attention to the giant horses than their uncle’s ponies.

Save the Ponies!

In time the ponies prove themselves as more than entertainment – they are hard working equines eager to do a good job.  When Magic and Moonshine help to rescue one of the Shire horses, the end result is better than Angela or Ian could have anticipated.  Save the Ponies! is an interesting look into the world of a pantomime pony whilst also exploring the work of the large Shire horses working in a brewery.  It’s an entertaining and educational read for young horse fans with some lovely illustrations by Elisabeth Grant.

FREE Webinar | Horse-Friendly Zoning Practices

March 23, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I love when you can gain access to free information that’ll help you in your horse knowledge or horse business.  And I especially like sharing about these resources so others can benefit!  I recently signed up to My Horse University as they offer free horse courses as well as paid ones.  They have an upcoming free webinar that focuses on the topic of Horse-Friendly Zoning Practices.

Now this webinar has a specific focus in the United States, but I am sure there will be general information that is valuable to horse owners anywhere around the world.  And knowing what laws are in place elsewhere can open your eyes to what’s available around you.

This webinar is to be run by Christine Hughes.  She is the author of Horse-Friendly Zoning Practices in American Communities and Planning and Zoning Guide for Horse Friendly Communities.

It’s great to hear from people who know what they’re talking about.  As a senior planner in the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, it sounds like Christine has ample experience and knowledge in this area.  As it says in the email about this webinar:

“…author Christine Hughes, AICP, will teach you about ELCR’s new guide on equine zoning. Christine will walk viewers through the guide and help you to understand and use the content and concepts. Of special interest are the descriptions of how individual communities around the US approach and regulate horse-keeping and activities through their zoning process. The guide, with an introduction by Tom Daniels PhD, professor, author and director at University of Pennsylvania Department of City and Regional Planning, is posted on the ELCR website (https://elcr.org/zoning-best-practices/) and will be available for preview and download.”

If you’re interested but cannot attend the webinar at this time, no worries!  Any My Horse University webinar is recorded and archived for free viewing at a later date.  You can check out the archived webinars online.  Maybe you’ll find other topics of interest!

Equi-Skills and Equestrian Australia in New South Wales

March 21, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently made aware of Equi-Skills as a program through Equestrian Australia.  This seems to be a New South Wales initiative in Australia.  This is something that Equestrian NSW has introduced to interschool riding.  In this initiative, riders can “work towards nationally recognised achievement certificates.”

I am all for trade schools and for students choosing to pursue these if they want to get into a trade and don’t have academic interests.  I also love that you can gain a horse qualification whilst completing your final years of high school.  This is another form of qualification that you can earn as part of your school extra curricular activities.  Honestly, to me it seems to be a great thing!

Equi-Skills and Equestrian Australia in New South Wales

This is for the student in NSW who is taking part in a horse riding program within school.  Within that, they are offered at a discount the workbooks towards their Introductory Riding and Introductory Horse Management certificates.  For the knowledgeable rider who is hoping to pursue instructing as a career after school, this can be a great way to get ahead.  And of course, to see if this is really what they want.

As it says on their site:

“On enrolment, riders receive the workbooks and an Equi-Skills saddle patch for their school saddlecloth.  The theory components of EA training are delivered in a flexible home-study manner…  Practical study may be done through the Equi-Skills group training programme or individually with coaches, coach educators or other industry experts.”

So how do you determine if this is for you?  This is a great thing to look into.  Especially if you want to pursue work within the equine industry after school.

You’ll gain information, training and certificates towards a qualification.  For those who are entertaining the idea of working with horses, the earlier they can pursue this possibility, the sooner they can determine if it is truly what they want.

The Thirteenth Horse by Amanda Wills

March 19, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In the Thirteenth Horse, readers are introduced to 12 year old Kristy Moore.  Kristy loves horses.  Until recently she has been able to enjoy regular riding lessons at the prestigious Coldblow Equestrian Centre.  A change in her father’s working situation has resulted in the family having to move house; to downsize.  On top of this, Kristy is at a new school struggling to make friends and she also no longer has riding lessons to look forward to.

The only thing the young girl can think of to fix her problems is to secure a job.  There’s just one issue: her young age.  By a stroke of luck, Kristy finds herself work a short while after she sets out to get a job.  When she speaks with the woman who is looking to hire someone she concludes she must have heard wrong.  The job that requires a hard worker who loves animals couldn’t possibly be a stable, could it?

Eager to make a good impression for her potential future employer, Kristy gets stuck into the tasks set before her.  Emma, the older woman is amazed and pleasantly surprised by the 12 year olds initiative.  She says as much and offers Kristy a job on the spot.

Kristy suddenly finds herself able to earn money so that she can afford horse riding lessons.  Better still, the job involves horses.  Even if she can’t afford to ride in the near future, the young girl is convinced that her daily interactions caring for the twelve horses on the property will solve the problem.  The mysterious thirteenth horse that she isn’t introduced to draws her attention and she questions just what the story is with the stocky gelding.

In time Kristy finds herself given the opportunity to ride – and to be a part of a team.  In the most unlikely of places and with unexpected people Kristy finds herself belonging and with friends.  However, her labourious job soon cuts into her schoolwork, leaving her parents with little choice but to make an ultimatum: school work has to come first or the horses have to go.

Having fallen in love with a Percheron gelding at the Mill Farm Stables that Emma runs, Kristy is devastated at the idea of not working there.  With her friends, they hatch a plan to help her keep her job and to stay on top of her schoolwork.  This proves to be very difficult around preparations for a quadrille performance in the New Year.  The Thirteenth Horse shows how a group of friends with grit and determination can overcome obstacles and enjoy themselves in spite of it all.  This book is a great introduction to the Mill Farm Stables Stories.
