5 Careers that are Hands on with Horses | Equus Education

There are many, many different careers relating to horses.  Want an example?  Well head along to Vocation-100 where over 170 horse related careers are explored via Equus Education.

This post is going to look at only 5 careers that are hands on with horses.  But I assure you there are many more!  Because let’s face it, sometimes it’s really nice to have a job that involves working with the animal in question!

  • Acupuncture – this particular equine career has a science background and is often carried out by veterinarians. You can find out more about an equine acupuncture course and read a profile on Susan Hamilton, an animal therapist
  • Barrier attendant – these people are often seen working hard at race meetings. Interested in the racing scene and want to work with horses in some capacity?  Find out about barrier attendants.
  • Flight attendant – want to combine horses and flying? Well here’s a unique position.  Flight attendants tend to horses’ needs as they travel from one country to another.
  • Instructing – your focus could be beginners, children, competitive riding, Western, English, racing – you name it! Working as an instructor will require knowledge in your field of focus, the ability to ride and to teach others on various horses.  You’ll also need insurance and probably an instructing qualification.
  • Stud work – now there are so many different positions within the area of breeding horses. You could be an AI technician, a stud hand, a breeder, a manager of broodmares, stallions or yearlings; the list goes on.  If you want daily interaction with breeding horses, consider the stud industry.

5 Careers that are Hands on with Horses

If you want to physically work with horses in your equine career, then be inspired by the possible number of horse jobs out there!  Why not try for something unique?  Or perhaps a job that requires a qualification to undertake it?  The choice is yours.

Inspiritus Equine, Inc

Inspiritus Equine, Inc looks at integrated soundness solutions for the horse.  I was made aware of this site when reading Suffering in Silence.  I love the fact that there are businesses like this.  As it states on the Inspiritus Equine site, various healing methods from both Eastern and Western medicine are utilised to diagnose lameness in a horse.

Dr. Robson is able to provide insight from the veterinary chiropractic side of things as well as veterinary acupuncture.  Saddle-fit evaluations and infrared thermography are also offered.  The list is topped off by the availability of Chinese and also western herbal medicine.

On top of all these different ways to look at a horse’s well being and assess potential lameness issues, Dr. Robson also boasts helping to educate horse owners and treating the affected horse/s compassionately.

Inspiritus Equine, Inc

Most people will recognise that one person can’t do everything.  But when you have a network of capable equine professionals, much more is possible.  As it states on the Inspiritus Equine, Inc site:

“Inspiritus Equine, Inc. unites the best healing methods from both Eastern and Western Veterinary Medicine, with top industry professionals in farriery, saddlery, thermography, and classical foundation training, to create an integrated, sound equine body and mind.  Inspiritus Equine, Inc. provides a unique approach to your horse’s well-being. Dr. Robson evaluates each patient as a whole horse and emphasizes client education while providing invaluable resources.”

I have touched on the niche idea of a veterinarian with a farriery focus before.  This particular incorporation seems to take the idea of combining niches to a whole new level.  When you have access to a professional who is able to be educated in various fields, this can greatly benefit your horse.  And if they make use of other professionals in various areas, this too is a plus.

“There are strong similarities in the way horses and those with autism see the world. Horses are often born into an environment they don’t understand, with overwhelming sights, sounds, and smells, and a sense that no one understands them. And when they see someone with autism, who has much the same background, and who knows them, and knows what they need – there is a connection. Since the two share the same experiences, they both relax, and seem to talk and understand each other.”  – Valerie Ormond

The Pegasus Shortcut by Pamela Love

January 8, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The Pegasus Shortcut is a delightful short read for young and older readers alike.  Set in a time when horses are the source of transport for messengers, it focuses on an illness in a local village.  The young son of a messenger spends his time preparing horses for his father who needs to get magical crystals to help cure those who haven’t yet died from a mysterious illness.

The son is dismayed to find after his father has left that one of the crystals was left behind.  Without it, the others won’t work and the trip will have been wasted.  Worse yet, his father will have exposed himself to the illness and could potentially meet the same fate of many who have died from it.

It is obvious he must try to catch up to his father.  And yet his father is on the fastest horse there is.  Still, the young boy decides on a pony that is sure footed and fast.  He knows he is racing against time to get to his father before he reaches the village.

The Pegasus Shortcut

There is a shortcut that would allow him to achieve his goal – beat his father to the town gate.  But it is unsafe and was banned many years earlier.  He soon decides to take the risk – people’s lives are at stake.  He takes a stubborn pony and heads out over the treacherous mountain as quickly as he can.

The trip is difficult but the boy is sure he is making time.  His mount presses on steadily and when they do the inevitable and beat his father to town, he realises a little magic may have been involved – and not from the crystals.  His mount seems to have the ability to fly.

American Association of Professional Farriers

January 5, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you have a desire to go into farriery as a career, it’s worth knowing about your local association.  They can provide much in the way of business advice, educational training and even qualification details.  Not to mention promotion of your services, related farrier events and more.  The American Association of Professional Farriers has much to offer on their website.

I love that they have a Career Centre on their site.  It provides details on farrier schools, gaining a farriery qualification and even scholarships for the year that can be applied for.  If you want to start you career as a farrier in the US, this looks like the place to go!

There is also a mentoring program, by the looks of things.  If you have questions about farriery as a career, who better to go to then a mentor?  You can learn from someone who has already been there, done that!  You may be provided with insight that you wouldn’t otherwise gain.  Mentors can teach what not to do in particular situations and even give much needed encouragement.

Tools are a much needed aid in the world of trimming horses’ feet.  On the Professional Farriers website you’ll even find links to different farrier supply stores.  This can help you to determine what your ongoing costs will be and how this will affect what you charge clients.

I think the mission statement on their website sums things up nicely:

“The American Association of Professional Farriers will promote the integrity of the farrier industry by strengthening the knowledge and skills of its members through continuing education and support at the state, national and international levels while improving overall equine health through collaboration with other industry professionals.”

The American Association of Professional Farriers

Back in 2001, issues of certification, publications, continuing education, alliances and professional relations for farriers were raised in a meeting held in Georgetown, Kentucky.  This led to a decision to start building the American Association of Professional Farriers.  This also led to the creation the Canadian Association of Professional Farriers and the International Association of Professional Farriers.  All three are governed by the same Board of Directors.

As I’ve said before on Equus Education, if you know of an association that helps to build and promote the industry you plan to go into, be sure you make use of its resources and contacts!  They’re there to help you.

Horse Stores as a Business Opportunity

January 3, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently in town we’ve had a new Equine Emporium open.  It got me to thinking about horse stores as a business opportunity.  I’ve touched on franchises before in the form of saddleries, but haven’t really looked at horse stores in general.

Horse Stores as a Business Opportunity | Equus Education

A horse store could offer a niche product – like particular known brands by those who work on farms or with horses.  R M Williams comes to mind here in Australia.  Or they may focus on horse related gifts that you could get for that horse crazy person.  Jewellery, books, mugs, framed photos, statues or other trinkets that somehow link back to the horse.

Maybe the horse store could include tack and health care products for your beloved equine.  Even grooming equipment and riding gear could be included.  Or perhaps the store focuses specifically on accessories for your equine/s.  You know – rugs, head collars, boots, etc.

Horse Stores as a Business Opportunity

Whatever the focus, it is possible to have a horse store as a business.  Like with any business, the owner will need to do their research.  There will be costs associated with running a business, ordering stock, having insurance and advertising.  On top of this, it’s important to know that what you’re selling is wanted and will be purchased by locals or those visiting.

Have you ever dreamt of having a horse store in your local community?  What products would be most used or desired by locals?  Would they be easy for you to source?  Could you support local artists who have horse related paintings, drawings, photography or other items?  This may be something to think about.

“A horse which stops dead just before a jump and thus propels its rider into a graceful arc provides a splendid excuse for general merriment.” ― Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
