Sweet Pony Dreams: Adventures of Lulu and Bug (Camping Fun!)

November 20, 2017 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recent free downloads on Amazon included three different books by L.B. Shively.  Two of these were from the Sweet Pony Dreams: Adventures of Lulu and Bug series for children.  The third book in the series focuses on Lulu and her beloved pony, Bug.

Sweet Pony Dreams: Adventures of Lulu and Bug #3 by L.B. Shively

Bug is a stuffed toy that Lulu sleeps with at night.  Together they travel to the land of dreams and go on many adventures.  In this particular story, Lulu travels with Bug to do some camping.  She is rapt to find that around the campfire are two of her favourite people – her grandmother and grandfather.

Lulu awakens from her wonderful dream and tells her mother all about her adventures.  After breakfast she heads off to school.  The students have been promised a reward of going to the local pool once they’ve finished their tests.  Lulu takes Bug along with her and finds a kindred spirit on the bus.  Another young girl named Misty loves ponies, too.  The two girls quickly decide to be friends.

Whilst at the pool, Lulu spies local bully Willie and decides to ignore him.  That is easy until he gets a hold of Bug and holds her out over the water.  Lulu is livid.  A silly prank soon turns into a dangerous afternoon at the pool.

Sweet Pony Dreams: Adventures of Lulu and Bug #3

This is a lovely short read for the younger horse lover.  It focuses on the bond people can have with horses whilst also teaching about doing the right thing.  When Lulu could have gotten angry at Willie for being mean to her, she instead chose to act quickly to save him.  The story is a lovely one.  One issue I had was inconsistent tenses within the story.  It switched between past and present tense regularly.

5 Horse Careers that Utilise Computers

November 17, 2017 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In such a technologically led world, it won’t surprise you to know that there are horse careers that utilise computers.  Perhaps you’re a horse lover and you’re computer savvy.  Then have you considered the idea of one of these horse related careers?  Perhaps you can combine a couple!

  • Office administration assistant – horse businesses need people to help make sure their office side of things run smoothly.  It is not unusual for horse studs and other businesses to need someone who can respond to emails, update the business website, undertake payroll and other business related finance roles on the computer.
Some horse businesses also make use of social media to build their online presence, manage a client mailing list and other computer related tasks.
  • Horse website designer – knowing horses and what makes a good horse image (like someone leading a horse from the left hand side or a horse cantering on the correct lead) can be beneficial to horse business owners.
As a horse person with website design skills, you’ll be able to create an awesome website for a horse business.  Plus, you’ll know what information is relevant and what photos are technically correct for the industry.

  • Horse programmer – perhaps you desire to create a program for horse businesses to utilise, such as Rendaivu.  Or an online game that people can enjoy playing.  Either way, there is a market out there for programmers with horse knowledge.
  • Horse book authors – now arguably this one can be done the old fashioned way.  You can write your horse story onto paper.  But in time, the book will need to be created electronically.  In the self-published world that is available now, horse authors can ultimately utilise computers to write.  They are also valuable for proof reading, publishing and promoting their books!
  • Horse editor – there are many written pieces that provide education and entertainment to others, with a focus on horses.  Whoever has written them doesn’t necessarily have the skills to make sure the text has correct formatting, grammar (and even some facts!).  For the knowledgeable horse person with a good grasp of grammar and their language, editing jobs can come in many forms.  They could be pieces for books (fiction and non), magazines, journals, educational resources and even online courses.

So there you have it!  Five ideas relating to computers and horses 🙂

Saddles for Women

November 15, 2017 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

There are some niche areas within the equine industry that I love having my eyes opened to.  One such is the focus area of saddles for women.  Perhaps like me, you consider saddles more to be for horses.  Yes, I know that bigger people may need a bigger saddle to sit in – much like a larger framed horse needs a larger saddle to encompass its frame.  But I genuinely hadn’t considered the idea of saddles being specific to the rider’s gender.  That is, not until I was introduced to Jochen and Sabine Schleese.

Now these two – and their staff – are incredibly passionate about educating the horse industry on correct saddle fit.  This is both for horse and rider.  I am currently reading Suffering in Silence and Jochen goes to incredible lengths to explain why a saddle needs to fit properly.  This is to the benefit of both horse and rider.

Saddles for Women

When you take into consideration the physical anatomy of a male and female, they are somewhat different.  This affects their posture and how they sit in the saddle.  Consequently, different saddles are advised for each of the sexes, to allow them to achieve the most correct riding position and to best benefit the horse.  Schleese have created saddles specifically for women to use in their riding careers and overall riding life.  They label themselves as the female saddle fit specialist.

If you have a desire to spend many hours in the saddle – whether for pleasure or competition – I encourage you to consider the value of saddle fit for yourself and your horse.  And if you’re a female, do the research and find out what is different about these saddles designed specifically for the female gender.  You may learn a thing or two and improve your riding position ability whilst you’re at it!

The Vetted Cowboy by Cherie Ullman

November 13, 2017 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I downloaded a copy of the Vetted Cowboy for free on Kindle.  It focuses on the lives of newly qualified veterinarian Riley Shaw and Jeremy Quinn, a reining champion establishing his training career.  The attraction is instant for Riley, in spite of Jeremy being difficult about such a young female treating his prize horse.  Still, she is quick to confide in her best friend Vanessa how much of jerk he was – both as a client and as a male in general when she was called out to his farm for a case of colic.

Jeremy is impressed by the vet’s spunk and makes it known he finds her attractive.  As a good looking, successful male in the horse industry, he has no qualms about his own appeal.  With a chance meeting outside of work, Jeremy finds the vet to be even more appealing – and concludes there may be a spark for her too.

With Congress looming on the horizon, both know they need to focus on their careers.  Jeremy has a prize gelding that he anticipates doing well, not to mention students he is training and other horses under his care.  Riley is a vet on call for the large horse event and knows she needs to stay focused and build her clientele.

Still, the two find themselves drawn together and can’t keep away.  It’s noticeable to everyone, including Jeremy’s overtly jealous ex-girlfriend.  When Nina finds a way to undermine the newly established couple, she takes it.  As someone who has no family, Riley is hesitant to let herself get attached to the attractive horse rider and trainer.  So when something occurs that has her questioning his intentions toward her, she concludes it is easier to shut down.

Jeremy is hurt that the young woman would take an ex-girlfriend’s word over his own.  When he confronts the vet about her actions, her acknowledgement that she was wrong isn’t enough.  Running on pride he shuts the door on their potential relationship.

It isn’t until Riley has a work related accident that Jeremy questions if he can manage without the vet he’s come to love.  The Vetted Cowboy is an entertaining romance.  It’s definitely a book for adults, with some overt descriptions when it comes to the physical side of their relationship.  The quarter horse world is touched on briefly although I would love a more in depth exploration of it!  The story ends well.

Equestrian Entries for the New Zealand Horse Rider

November 10, 2017 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Whilst learning about the Equidays event in New Zealand recently I found myself then guided to the Equestrian Entries website.  I had no idea that there was an online resource for horse riders in New Zealand!  Equestrian Entries provides details on horse competitions around New Zealand.

You can register to be able to make use of this online resource that allows you to look at events in New Zealand.  You can also view your entries into said competitions and the results.  Wonderful!  To register you’ll need an ESNZ Registration number.

Equestrian Entries for Horse Riders

I love the concept of this site.  Now I may be ignorant and perhaps there are such sites for Australia, the UK and US, too!  But I love that there is one place you can go to find out about national horse competitions, register in these events and in time, see the results.  For each event, you can see:

  • start and closing dates of the event
  • the discipline/s covered
  • the location of the show

You can even view location details on GoogleMaps, check out the schedule and enter yourself into the event.  Wonderful!  So if you’re a rider in New Zealand, be sure to make use of this incredible resource!  And if you’re located elsewhere, why not do a search to see if there’s something similar you can utilise?  And if there isn’t… maybe this is an area for someone to step in and create one 😉

“There is a lot of folklore about equestrian statues, especially the ones with riders on them. There is said to be a code in the number and placement of the horse’s hooves: …four legs in the air means that the sculptor was very, very clever. Five legs in the air means that there’s probably at least one other horse standing behind the horse you’re looking at; and the rider lying on the ground with his horse lying on top of him with all four legs in the air means that the rider was either a very incompetent horseman or owned a very bad-tempered horse.” ― Terry Pratchett
