Equus Education Blog Carnival

October 16, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Well the last blog carnival at EQUUS was in August of this year and I thought it was time I encouraged people to submit equine related posts for the next one!

What’s the point?  The idea of this blog carnival is to give readers a chance to have a look at a collection of posts from different blogs that relate to horse education in some way.  This could be:

  • an informative post about horses
  • a review of a riding lesson
  • information about horse related courses or study
  • a book review of a great horse book
  • something else equine educationally related

Submissions will be taken up until November 10th and then all posts that fit into the category of equine related education will be shared in a post on November 14.  If you’re looking for exposure for your blog or know of someone who is, point them towards submitting a post or two!

Blog Action Day: Human Rights

October 16, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Today is Blog Action Day, the topic being Human Rights.

All Horse Owners have the Right to Learn how to Better Care for Horses

Now no surprises here that I’ll take an equine view on this one (and fit in horse rights whilst I’m at it).  I believe horse lovers and owners have many rights that can positively affect their equine friends.  They have the right:

  • to continue to educate themselves about horse care, health and welfare
  • to enjoy riding happy and healthy horses
  • to generate a career with an animal that they love

Now depending on your personal situation, you may not believe you have the means or the right to do each of the above points.  I challenge you to look for opportunities to do so!

Education doesn’t always have to cost, there are often free courses or information or videos online that you can benefit from, books that you can borrow and knowledgeable people who you can ask questions of.

Horse riding may not be an option, but you may discover in equine circles friends who are able to offer you a chance to ride with them, or you may be able to save up for trail rides or lessons on an infrequent basis.

Now with regards to careers, there are horses in most countries of the world that need looking after.  I believe there are many opportunities for those who are keen and continually learning.  If you’re interested in learning about what you can expect from a horse career, perhaps you’d like to take a look at Horse Country – A World of Horses, which explores the lives of 4 women working as horse riding instructors and on a thoroughbred stud.

“Riders who force their horses by the use of the whip only increase their fear for they then associate the pain with the thing that frightens them.” – Xenophon

Great Anatomy Educational Resource

October 15, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A workmate sent this link around for reference for our students and I thought it a great one to share!  If you’re interested in the horse’s anatomy, especially with regards to where muscles sit internally, there are great photos on this site with individual muscles identified and named.

If you visit this Horse Dissection site and click on ‘search the database’, you can view in great detail different photos of dissections of varying parts of the horse’s body.

If you’re interested in the skeletal side of things, perhaps an equine clay model would be of interest.

“What a piece of work is a horse! How noble in reasons! How infinite in faculty! In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel! In apprehension how like a man! The beauty of the world! The paragon of animals!” – James Agate

Elyne Mitchell – A Daughter Remembers by Honor Auchinleck

October 12, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Elyne Mitchell by Honor Auchinleck

I love the writings of Elyne Mitchell. As a pre-teen I fell in love with the Silver Brumby and still find it as one of my favourite novels at nearly thirty years of age.

Marking the centenary of this author, Elyne’s daughter Honor released Elyne Mitchell a Daughter Remembers. It was for Christmas that a sister bought this for me and I’m sad to say it’s taken me so long to get through it in spite of having started it shortly after receiving it!

I hadn’t thought I’d done so, but this account of Elyne’s life from the eyes of her youngest daughter has shocked me into realising that perhaps I’d put this author on a pedestal. Perhaps when we recognise someone’s strength in an area – such as writing – we go on subconsciously to assume that they’re strong in other areas.

I found this biography to highlight how hard it can be for one person to pursue their love of writing whilst raising a family, sometimes as a single parent due to Elyne’s husband being a prisoner of war for some time. Honor, the author of this biography accounts often how she is left to feel like she hasn’t achieved enough, isn’t smart enough and most of all, isn’t worthy of being given her mother’s time to help in school work and other areas she may be confused about.

I guess the revelation for me that a biography written by a daughter will be nothing like an author’s fictional world of horse herds! Consequently, I found this book to be disappointing, in spite of being enlightening.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s factual and well written – it just opened up one side of an author that perhaps I would rather stay ignorant to. At the end of the day, Elyne Mitchell’s writings will still be pieces that I will no doubt read over and again. This biography however, I’m not sure will fall into that category.

Friday Feature: Coaching (Horse Riding)

October 11, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Moving onto the next letter of the alphabet, it’s time to look at an equine career starting with C. If you missed last weeks, take a look at Friday Feature: Bloodstock Agent.

A coach for horse riding is someone who is able to:

  • advise riders on how to improve their riding or
  • manage their riding amongst other life events

This may involve fixing an issue with their timing whilst carrying out a task, their riding position or even how they go about asking a horse to carry out a movement.  In the manner of managing riding, it may involve setting goals – long and short term, and taking steps to work towards these goals.

What are Your Riding Goals?

When it comes to instructing horse riding, often a qualification is needed and most definitely, a working knowledge of horse riding and how horses respond to riding aids!

The following links may be of benefit if you’re interested in coaching as a career option:
